Legal
Terms of Service
Summary
- Pay once, no ads. The App is bought once through Google Play — currently US $2.50 — with no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases.
- Use it lawfully. Don’t use the App to harm others, deceive people or break the law.
- Check before you open. Codes can lead anywhere. The App warns you and asks before opening a website, but you decide what to trust.
- Check codes before you print them. Test a sample of anything you create, especially in bulk, before relying on it.
- Retail barcode numbers are yours to obtain. The App draws EAN and UPC barcodes, but it doesn’t issue the numbers in them; those come from GS1.
- Product details come from open databases and may be incomplete or wrong.
- Your consumer rights still apply. Nothing in these terms takes away rights the law gives you.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) apply to your use of Universal Scanner (the “App”) and this website. By downloading, installing or using the App, you agree to these Terms and to the Google Play Terms of Service under which you obtained it. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the App.
How the App handles your information is explained in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.
2. Who we are
The App is developed and published by Tech Vora Limited (“we”, “us”, “our”). You can reach us using the details in the Contact section.
3. Your licence
We grant you a personal, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to install and use the App on Android devices you own or control, for your own personal or business purposes, in line with these Terms.
You may not:
- copy, modify, translate or create derivative works of the App, except as permitted by law or by an open-source licence that applies to a part of it;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the App, except to the extent the law expressly allows;
- sell, rent, lend, sublicense or redistribute the App, or offer it as a service to others;
- remove, hide or alter any copyright, trademark or other notices, or get around the App’s licensing through Google Play.
The App is licensed to you, not sold. We keep all rights not expressly granted in these Terms.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the App to:
- break any law or regulation, or infringe anyone’s rights, including privacy and intellectual property rights;
- create or share codes that link to malware, phishing pages, scams or other harmful or deceptive content;
- create codes that imitate another business’s products, packaging or payment details in order to mislead people;
- scan, store or share other people’s personal or confidential information without the right to do so;
- attempt to disrupt, overload or gain unauthorised access to the App, our website or any service the App connects to.
5. Scanned content and links
Codes are created by other people, and the App can’t control what they contain. A code may point to a website, phone number, payment link, Wi-Fi network or other content that is inaccurate, offensive or unsafe.
To help you, the App shows the full address before opening any scanned website and asks you to confirm, and it explains what each code contains before you act on it. These checks reduce risk but can’t remove it. You are responsible for deciding whether to open a link, call a number, join a network or make a payment. We are not responsible for third-party websites, apps or content reached through a scanned code.
6. Product information
When you scan a retail barcode, the App can show the product’s name, brand, category and photo from open, community-maintained databases such as Open Food Facts and Open Library. This information is provided for convenience. It may be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and it is not checked by us.
Don’t rely on it for decisions about health, safety, allergies, nutrition or the law. Always check the product’s own label and packaging.
7. Codes you create
You can create QR codes and barcodes one at a time or in batches, and save, print, share or export them. You are responsible for what you put in your codes and how you use them.
- Test before you rely on them. Print size, ink, paper, colours, logos and the scanner used all affect whether a code reads. Before printing codes in quantity, or using them on products, labels or signage, test a sample with the devices your customers or staff will use.
- Retail barcode numbers. The App draws EAN, UPC, ITF-14, GS1-128 and similar barcodes from the numbers you enter. It doesn’t issue or register those numbers. To sell products through retailers, you normally need numbers licensed from GS1 or your local GS1 organisation. Making a barcode in the App doesn’t give you the right to use a number that belongs to someone else.
- Check imported data. When you create codes from a file or a number sequence, the App checks each value against the chosen format, but it can’t know whether the values themselves are correct for your purpose.
8. Your data and files
Your scan history, created codes and settings are stored only on your device, as described in our Privacy Policy. We don’t hold a copy and can’t recover them for you. Android’s cloud backup is turned off for the App, so uninstalling it, clearing its storage or losing your device will permanently delete this data.
If your codes or history matter to you, export them regularly using the App’s export options. Files you save or export are yours, and are kept by your device or the app you share them with.
9. Price and refunds
The App is a paid app. You buy it once through Google Play, which handles the payment. The price is currently US $2.50; Google Play shows the price in your local currency, including any taxes that apply, and the price shown when you buy is the one you pay.
- One payment. There are no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases.
- Tied to your Google account. You can install the App on other Android devices signed in to the same Google account at no extra cost.
- Updates. Updates we release are free, but buying the App doesn’t guarantee any particular future feature; features may change as described in Changes and availability.
- Price changes. We may change the price for new buyers. This doesn’t affect anyone who has already bought the App.
- Refunds are handled by Google Play under its refund policies. If you have a problem with the App, contact us and we will help where we can. This doesn’t affect any right to a refund you have under consumer law.
10. Third-party services
Parts of the App rely on services run by others, including Google Play (downloads and payment), Google ML Kit (reading codes on your device), and Open Food Facts and Open Library (product information). Your use of those services is also governed by their own terms and policies. We aren’t responsible for their availability, content or practices, and some App features may stop working if a service changes or closes.
11. Intellectual property
The App, its design, text, graphics and the Universal Scanner name and logo belong to Tech Vora Limited or its licensors and are protected by intellectual property laws. These Terms don’t give you any right to use our names, logos or trademarks.
The App includes open-source software, which is licensed to you under its own license terms. Those components and their licenses are listed in the Open-source software section of our Privacy Policy. Where an open-source license gives you rights that these Terms would otherwise limit, the open-source license applies to that component.
Google Play and the Google Play logo are trademarks of Google LLC. Other names and marks belong to their owners.
12. Disclaimers
We work hard to make the App accurate and reliable, but we provide it “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free or free of harmful components, that every code will be read or decoded correctly, or that it will meet your particular needs. Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain warranties to be excluded, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.
13. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of profits, revenue, business, goodwill or data, arising from your use of the App;
- we are not liable for loss caused by content reached through a scanned code, by product information from third-party databases, or by codes you create that don’t scan or are used incorrectly;
- our total liability to you for any claim relating to the App is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for the App in the twelve months before the claim, or the equivalent of 50 US dollars.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded by law. If you use the App as a consumer, you also keep any rights you have under consumer protection law.
14. Changes and availability
We may update the App from time to time to add, change or remove features, fix problems or meet legal requirements. We may also change these Terms. If we make a significant change to the Terms, we will update the effective date above and tell you in the App or on its Google Play listing before it takes effect. If you keep using the App after a change takes effect, the updated Terms apply. If you don’t agree, you can stop using the App and uninstall it.
We may stop offering the App. If we do, we will give reasonable notice where we can, and the App will keep working on your device for as long as Google Play and Android allow, though online features may stop.
15. Ending these terms
You can stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it. We may suspend or end your licence if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms. When the Terms end, you must stop using the App. Sections that by their nature should continue — including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability and governing law — continue to apply.
16. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and disputes will be handled by the courts of Nigeria. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live and may bring claims in your local courts.
Before starting any formal claim, please contact us so we can try to resolve the issue informally.
17. General
- Whole agreement. These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the App.
- Severability. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
- No waiver. If we don’t enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Transfer. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these Terms to another organisation; this won’t reduce your rights. You may not transfer yours.
- Language. These Terms are written in English. If they are translated, the English version applies where the two differ.
